Come join us for an inspirational day of learning the art of wildculturing from Steven Martyn of “The Sacred Gardener”. Steven has been a professional gardener and wildcrafter for more than thirty years, and has an MA in traditional plant use. Through his stories, explanations and live examples, Steven will guide us into a new ancient mode of agriculture, what he calls wildculturing or integrated polyculture. In this approach the hard lines between gardening and foraging, as well as between what we want and what’s best for the ecology blur beyond worthy distinction.
His practice and techniques are deceptively simple because they often follow or mimic natural growth patterns, such as succession and polyculture.
Steven has come to his methods not through any conventional or unconventional training, but through the land Herself and the wisdom of First Nations philosophies and practices. Initially clued into these methods from the Lacandon Maya people from Chiapas, Mexico, Steven continued to practice and learn for three more decades from the land and many other elders closer to his North American home in Golden Lake, including William Commanda of Kitigàn-zìbì Anishinàbeg First Nation and Henry Lickers from Akwesasne.
